Experimenting with city landscapes.... illustrating Hobart!

I've been busy lately trying something a bit different with my drawing and thought I'd share it with you all and see what you think.

I've never really drawn much architectural stuff, except for quick sketches when I was travelling that never went anywhere beyond my journal. But I thought it would be good to challenge my cute-animal-drawing hands and do something a little different.

So this is my town. For those of you from far away or who are new around here, Hobart is where I live. It is the capital city of my island state of Tasmania, Australia. Despite it being our capital and by far the biggest city in Tasmania, it's still pretty small - about 200,000 people live in the greater Hobart region.

It's also a really beautiful city, with a thriving wharf area, lots of parks and greenery and beautiful Mount Wellington right there behind the city. As you can see from my drawing, there's some beautiful old architecture (Hobart is the second oldest city in Australia after Sydney) as well as a few 60s or 70s clangers that mar the landscape. Still, it's all part of a city's growth and development so it makes for a pretty interesting scene.

I had fun with this picture - it took me ages but I'm happy with how it turned out. I really enjoyed the process of drawing something completely different from my usual topics but applying my own way of drawing and artistic license to make it mine. What do you think? Should I do more like this??

I'm now anticipating your next book - A Collection of Australian Cities. A good project while you're on the road perhaps! ;)
